At Swift Elementary, not sure what year, it was after 1960 for sure because I remember being able to see the JFK motorcade go Eastbound on Abram from my classroom during the 1960 election. A few years later, the view of Abram was blocked by the construction of what is now the Heather Way Apartments. Originally, I believe they were called the Mikado Apts, and that Jack Harris, Grady’s father was one of the investors. One afternoon, when the apartments were about 90% complete (I think that’s what the paper said), the apartments caught fire. My classroom’s windows faced north, towards the apartments across the street. We saw a couple of little kids in front of the flaming building, watching the fire. The next thing we knew, Steve went running out of the school, crossed the street, and guided the kids away from the fire. Cheers erupted.
